Health and Safety and Transport Regulations

Health and Safety

From a global perspective, batteries are safe products during their use phase, either by consumer or in industrial applications. Based on year-long experience, the manufacturers took care of any safety issues during manufacture and the use phase.

When does some Health and safety issue arise?

  • When using the battery for an unintended purpose

  • When over -using the batteries (even for an intended purpose)

  • When trying to recharge primary batteries

  • When dismantling a battery by an unauthorised (or untrained) person

  • When opening the battery cells

  • When disregarding batteries in fires, landfilled (authorized or not) or in any other process where the integrity of the battery (cells) is no longer guarantee.

  • When a battery is damaged or defective

  • During transport if some care is not taken (see ADR and UN transport regulations).

  • Etc.

Transport regulations

EBRA supports an initiative together with several other industry associations in which transport regulations are revised and through which help can be provided to the members of those associations. There is a dedicated website for disclosing information on transport, as the matter is of utmost importance, and at the same time hard to understand and put into practice.
